The Parent Forum is a place to share ideas, questions and solutions with parents that share a common interest in teaching a second language, or preserving a native language at home. Over the years we have received many emails and phone calls from parents asking questions and sharing their frustrations.
As a parent who has struggled with most of the same issues, I decided to create a place where we can share and archive the concerns and solutions in hopes that we will create a database of ideas that will make our job easier, because as we all know it is not easy to raise a child bilingual. The dominant language dominates and the challenge is in creating the opportunities to hear and speak the second language. To get you started, here are some examples of questions we have heard:
"I am a mother of a three year old and not a native Spanish speaker. Is it possible to raise my child bilingual with my limited speaking skills and where do I start?"
"I am a native Spanish speaker and my husband only speaks English. Will it confuse my child to hear two languages at home?"
"I speak ony English. How do I get my native speaking husband to speak Spanish to our child?
"I speak to my child in Spanish but he only responds in English and refuses to try. What can I do?"
